Not only does it put a player on your pages, but it shows your audience how they can subscribe to your show and it generates an RSS feed that you can submit to iTunes. So without further ado, let’s, jump right now into the ScreenFlow and I’ll.
Take you through a walkthrough of how I’ve set mine up alright, so first thing we have to do if we have a wordpress website is make sure that we have the power press plugin. So you pop on over here, I’m in WordPress.
This is my dashboard obvi and go to plugins click, add new, plug-in and then pop on over here to the search look for power, press it’s. One word it doesn’t actually come up when you search for two words and the plugin is right here.
It’s, the power press, a podcasting plug-in by blueberry. You would then click this lower right-hand corner and hit install once it’s installed, you would hit activate and then you are good. Wonder, Twins activate.
So what we’re shooting for here is this bad boy. So, on a this is essentially a regular blog post page, and this gives me the power press player player right here and then apple podcast. This gives you really cool ways if I control click on this stuff and open link in new tabs and Android and stitcher, I’ve already done so this links to all of the places where people can find your show.
So it’s, super cool. It makes things really really easy for you. The other thing it does in what you can’t really see right now, but I’ll. Show you in a second is: it gives you an RSS feed that you can then submit to iTunes and to all the other podcast directories.
So let’s pop on over once the things installed. If you don’t know how to install a plug-in just go to Google rather go to YouTube and say: how do I install a plugin and then you can install it so like? If I did this thing right here, this skip to timestamp.
Whatever this is, if I installed it, it would install and then I would have to activate it. So you get the idea right. You go here to install plugins, there are, there will be a bunch, and I just did that – skip to timestamp 1, which is like right here and I would just activate and then you’re there.
Then your your you’re ready to go so another thing worth noting. Is you see there’s? A lot of like update, update update, I don’t, always update my my plugins, because I’m. Very much and if it, if it’s not broke if any broke don’t fix it.
So if something happens to my website and there’s, some big security update that says: hey you guys. You have to update this thing. I’ll, do it otherwise I don’t have to update every single time and so for better for worse.
Typically, though, that serves me because sometimes you get some incompatibilities with various plugins and it can take your whole site now, at any rate, if I scroll down here to the left hand side, you’ll, see one called power press.
So if I click on power press, this is sort of the first page that you get, and this is what we’re going to tour through today. Now there are a lot of different settings that you can use. You can import your podcast right into here, so if you have an RSS feed from a different show, or rather from a different service, you can import it right here.
You can migrate your media, which means that you are your host. Your moving your media from like, wherever it is to blueberry. These guys have a lot of different options that are fairly blueberry centric.
So you don’t have to go with all of them. Podcasting SEO I’ve, never even looked at its brand new, but it looks like you can just specify custom titles. None of this stuff is anything you’re gonna need right now.
I think what I’m gonna show. You is just getting the thing installed, getting the basics set up and then, if you want to dig in and go super pro style and make an awesome YouTube video, you should totally do that.
So let’s, go back to settings and let’s start here here’s, a welcome it’s, a bunch of news about blueberry and things you probably don’t need at the moment. So episodes all right, so this is where we ‘
Ve got to start checking some boxes and doing some stuff. So this podcast entry box corresponds to let’s. Do this open this link in a new tab? It corresponds to this area. So if I was doing a new post right now and every time I do a post, it’s, essentially a new podcast episode.
So this would be my show notes. This would be the title of my show and then the podcast episode. All of this right here, all the stuff that we’re able to fill in at the moment that’s. What we’re checking off right now that’s.
What all of this info is so it’s, saying what is your media URL and that one goes right here meet a URL, then it says media file, size and duration. Do you want to specify that that’s all right there? That’s, I’ve, got it on auto, detect and auto, detect iTunes subtitle.
Are there custom subtitles? Now you could just unclick some of this stuff. One thing I do leave checked is the iTunes explicit field, because every once in a while, I’ll have a guest or it’ll. Be me on my show that’s, a little potty mouth and I want to be able to alter that right here.
Instead of having to do it like in iTunes or otherwise so just decide what you want, you can pretty much leave it on defaults. If you’d like to and you’re – probably good to go, but let’s. Go back so that’s, that services and stats.
This is again sort of pretty blueberry centric. We probably don’t need that for the moment, unless you’re going to host with blueberry, I’m currently hosting with libsyn. So I actually upload my files to Lipson and then copy the URL from there and then paste it into that spot right here.
The media, URL area – you can see it says: traffic dot, Lipson com, so there’s that website. So this is one of the things that I think you probably want to make the first change, and by the way I am in advanced mode, there is a simple mode that that Tunes a lot of the stuff out you don’t need.
You know it’s like it just gives you the basics right here and then you’re good to go, but this is advanced mode. I’m gonna switch back over here and show you guys how to kind of make it work so on a website.
First, it says enable power, press, media players and link. So do you want a player on your page? Yes, otherwise, why would we be here? Okay, the next thing to do is the default is below the page content, meaning where do you want your player? To show up? Is it above or below? Now I’ve got mine above so, if I look at this page there’s, a obviously an initial image and then I ‘
Ve got the player first. Otherwise the player would be at the bottom. So I don’t know how long your show notes are sometimes when I have episodes that have a lot of show notes. If I had my player all the way at the bottom, I feel like it would get a little buried.
So I leave mine at the top and you can do all kinds of other things with it. You can play a new window, part of the player and that’s. What we’re altering right now is we’re altering? Essentially, what shows up right here so basically from here to here, go up from here to here is what we’re altering now switch is, do you want this thing to say to say, play a new window? Do you want a download option for your podcast? Do you want different subscription options for your guests to check out? So that is here that this is display player, okay play a new window, display download link and then it says, subscribe links, and I really love these.
Actually, this is really cool. What’s neat about this is that you can instantly give somebody the option to check you out on iTunes, on Android, on Google Play on stitcher your RSS feed, if they have their own reader or a special RSS application, and then how to subscribe, Which is one of the coolest things that I think this plug-in does if I click this and show you guys what this does check this thing out, this is a page.
It makes automatically that says: hey here’s, how you subscribe to my podcast here’s, all the different places you can find it and then here are the instructions on how you can subscribe to the show. So this is a really cool way.
In fact, you could take this thing and make a little pretty link out of it and say hey guys if anybody wants to know how to subscribe. To my show, it’s, just solo or comm slash subscribe and it works great.
So I’d love. This is one of my favorite features about this particular plugin. Is that does that? Ok, then? So all of those and we’ll, get to how you populate those things in a second feeds. Now your podcast is on something called an RSS feed.
Okay, if I show you what my raw RSS feed is, I’ll, see if I can make that show. It looks like a big chunk of code essentially and this RSS, that’s. What it looks like this crazy long chunk of code, that’s, what that’s? What this plug-in is generating for you.
It then puts it into a nice format which then iTunes and all of the other services can read, and every time you update this page every time you make a new blog post. That is, you know, a new episode of your show.
This feed gets updated and effectively syndicated all over the world. As long as you’ve submitted your feed to all of the other various services they will show up and it will be updated so that’s.
What this thing does so it’s, saying enhance all feeds. Don ‘ T worry about that. Just do what it says recommended right. Special podcast only feed is solopreneur our com, slash feed, slash podcast.
So if I show you here on, if I were to let’s, say edit, this post, I’ll, show ya what this looks like kind of behind the scenes and you’ve got your title. This is literally the title of the show on iTunes that’s.
What this is that’s, what that’s? What it will feed from this is the description of the show on iTunes. Okay, then I have, if I click this button. This automatically goes into my podcast only feed what the reason why it does this is because you can then have regular blog posts intertwined in your on your website.
So you know you could have a regular blog post and then the next post might be a podcast. So you ‘ Ll see that’s here and then, if I click modify, this is where the show exists right now it’s been uploaded to Lipson, and I just copied and pasted the URL right into here, so that’s.
It there’s, not much to it. So all of this stuff is here and then feed settings. This is where we got to start putting in some information. So again, I’m on feeds. This is what do you want? Your show called on all the various services let’s.
Let’s. Talk about! I’m gonna I’m gonna default to iTunes because it’s like 82 percent of the market. So what do you want? Your show to be called on iTunes. This is what mine is called right here: the solopreneur our podcast, with my colonial profitably, unprofitably unemployable.
Now, if I change this – and I take this TM out – and I go back to iTunes in a few minutes – that TM will be removed, it will not exist anymore. The feed description – and this is just a short description of what the show is – I’ve – got mine to set the most 250 most recent episodes.
This is where you can have some trouble, because I’ve. Had this thing maxed before, where it’s like 500 episodes or something and it choked my feed, it made that RSS document this crazy piece. It made this thing so long that it actually broke.
My feed and my show stopped updating on a number of different platforms, so you got to keep this thing a little lower than I did so, keep it to 50 or below, and there’s. Something called episode: feed episode, Maximizer the feed Maximizer allows you to a much larger number into the episodes posts for feed while keeping the bite size down.
So it’s. Really the last ten episodes will have all the juice in the previous. However, many you have will get kind of a stripped down version of them now people can still download them and there’s, not a problem there, but the feed will be a little stripped down at that point.
Let’s, see what else I’ve got it set to English. My copyright goes on the bottom of the page. Where’s, the show San Diego. It’s three times a week. These are all things that are going to be registered in iTunes, so you got to make sure and your rating, where you want it blah blah blah that’s all there.
So you got to check that out. Then the iTunes is specific. Here is your itunes subtitle, so on the previous page, you got the title. This is the subtitle and then here is the program summary that’s. What is right here, let me see if I can just pop this thing up right now so right here under here, where it says from the provider becoming profitably unemployable.
We’re host, Michael O’Neill blah. That is right here. You see this becoming properly unplayable. Ah, and then, if I flip back over, you’ll, see the slow preneur, our podcast of Michael Neal profitably unemployable it’s, got the little TM on it like I just talked to you guys.
That is here that is right here. I just took the TM off what that goes right there. So that is the title yeah on iTunes. This is the sub. Actually, this is the author field. I’ve got I’ve got it hacked a little bit right now, because, instead of just having my name, I have a little description with a few keywords in it that used to work.
I don’t know if it works anymore, but but I’m still doing it. So so right here on iTunes, it’ll, say who is the author of this show and where is it boopadoo to key? Where here’s key words that don’t really need that they’re, not using them anymore.
Right here here’s, the author name and I’ve got this whole thing. It says Michael O’Neill, chats with game changers like James all tutored, Adam Carolla, Jack, Canfield, Hines, Ward and many more so I don’t know if it still works anymore, but I’m still doing it.
I haven’t gotten yelled for you. This is where you choose the categories that your show is meant to be on. So on iTunes, you see right here which says podcast and business and management and marketing that’s, the first one.
I’ve chosen business management and marketing that’s there. Now I could actually go to health and self-help, and my show would be there as well, and I could also go to news and politics and my show would be there as well.
If you know you’re gonna have potty mouth on. Every single in your episodes, just change it to explicit content. You can absolutely get your show deleted from your from iTunes. If you are cursing on the show – and you do not tell people – you’re – going to be cursing on the show here’s, an email from iTunes and iTunes type.
This is interesting because some people are putting out seasons of episodes. Now so, if you do that, you might want to have your show like episode. 1 is always episode 1, and you want that to be. The first show that people listen to so let’s say you have a 12 part series on something, but you want people instead of seeing episode 12, which would have been your most recently updated version as number one.
It flips that and says I want this thing to be serial and I want it to be one two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight nine right don’t worry about the iTunes new feed URL don’t muck with this. This is something that can totally mess up your feed.
In fact, all of these things can mess up your feed, so don’t sweat any of that stuff. For now, Google Play another great platform to get your. It — your your podcast on what this does. If you don’t fill anything out.
If you’ve already submitted your show to Google Play, which you have to do separately, you can, if you just leave this blank, it will automatically take the stuff that you used in iTunes, which is super cool artwork.
This is my artwork from a show. You want this thing to be at least 3000 pixels by 3000 pixels. In fact, if Google likes it at 7000 pixels by 7000 pixels this one 3000, I think the iTunes minimum is 1400 by 1400.
So you ‘ Ve got to make sure that you design that or if you have a designer make sure that they know that they can do it in a JPEG or a PNG right here and it ‘ S got to be at least 1400 by 1400.
I’ve got mine set to 3,000 by 3000, because I want it to be the biggest that they can use iTunes episode image it’s. The same. You can pretty much do that here. I don’t. Do that for episode image. I I do individual episode images and then Google Play images.
I could have left this alone. It would have just used the I to Jim into iTunes images as well. So no big and finally destinations so here is they’re telling you once again here’s, your RSS feed. This is what it looks like and then, as you go through your submission process, once you’ve submitted your show to iTunes.
Itunes is gonna, come back to you and say: hey guess what your show is live now and here’s, your URL, so we’re telling it. We’re telling power press! Ok here’s! My itunes URL and that one’s, going to go to let’s.
Go back here to sunny that’s. Gon na go right here to Apple podcast, that’s. What this link does Google Play Music? That’s. What this one does right here, Google Play, then we ‘ Ve got blueberry that’s, their own service.
We’ve got stitcher, which is here. This is a stitcher and we ‘ Ve got tune in radio which is somewhere around here as well, so I have one of these on tuning but effectively once you’re submitted to the major services you want to put that stuff in here, so that you can take advantage of that.
You know subscribe to our podcast kind of odd, so fill those things out. I mean really. The the bulk of the work is done here in feeds here’s, your title and then in iTunes, which is you know, subtitle description.
Keywords you don’t really need anymore, but picking your categories, picking your author and how you want to do that. And then you know making sure you know what your RSS feed URL is and you’re good to go.
